What Is a Timeline Sequence?
A Sequence allows you to link multiple timeline line items together so they function as a connected group. Once line items are added to a Sequence, you can adjust the Start Time of the entire Sequence or change the Duration of an individual line item, and the remaining items will automatically adjust to maintain the timing of the sequence.
Sequences make it easier to manage schedules without manually updating each line item. They help keep your timeline flowing smoothly by automatically adjusting the timing of connected items, eliminating unnecessary gaps or overlaps.
For line items to be added to a Sequence, they must have consecutive timing. This means the end time of one line item must match exactly with the start time of the next line item. For example, if one item ends at 2:00 PM, the next item must begin at 2:00 PM.
Once your line items are connected in a Sequence, any timing changes will automatically flow through the rest of the Sequence, helping you keep your schedule accurate and on time.
How To Create a Sequence
To create a Sequence, click the link icon in the Sequence column and enter a Sequence name. You can select an existing Sequence group or choose Create New Sequence to create a new one.
Note: All Sequences must have a unique name across all Event Timelines in the Project.
Selecting the Create new sequence option will immediately open an edit form with the specific line item included. To successfully save the Sequence, you must name it first.
Now that the Sequence group is created, you can add to it other Timeline line items.
Note: To add items to a Sequence, the line items must have consecutive timing. This means the end time of one item must align exactly with the start time of the next, ensuring a seamless flow without gaps.
Editing a Sequence
To edit the first line item in a Sequence, you’ll need to open the Edit Sequence window.
Click the link icon on the line item that belongs to the Sequence you want to edit. Hover over the Sequence name to open the slide-out menu, then select Edit Sequence.
The Edit Sequence window will appear, where you can make changes to the Sequence and update the timing as needed.
The first line item in a Sequence cannot be edited directly from the timeline. To make changes to the first line item, you must open the Edit Sequence window.
Adding items into a Sequence
You can add line items on the Timeline page by clicking the appropriate sequence, or you can add them directly in the Sequence editor window.
You can add new line items at the beginning, end, or in between the existing line items in the Sequence editor window. These items will automatically be marked with the Sequence attribute on the Timeline view.
Note: Remember to assign the appropriate Vendors and Tags to your new line items.
Shifting sequenced items
There are several ways to shift sequenced line items.
Adjusting the start time of the first item: This will shift all following line items accordingly.
Duration adjustments: Changing the duration of any item will shift the start and end time of all following sequenced line items, but none of the items before it.
Drag and drop: You can easily drag and drop line items within the sequence, and the start and end times will adjust automatically depending on where you drop it.
Note: You cannot adjust the start or end time of any other line items in the sequence, only the original start time and the durations of each line item.
